CBN GOV: China to start importing from Nigeria

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has said the federal government is “talking with China” in order to be “importing some of its own items from Nigeria.”

According to Emefiele, this will help reduce the gulf in trading between the two countries. Speaking at a press conference at the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC, on the last day of the 2016 World Bank/IMF spring meeting, he also said part of Nigeria’s deal with China is that Nigeria would become the Asian country’s trading hub in West Africa.

“China has appointed South Africa as its trading hub for Remnibi transactions in the Southern African region, has appointed Kenya as its trading hub for East and Central Africa. “And Nigeria, the mandate that we signed is for us to be appointed as the trading hub in the West African sub region.

In all, we expect that it is going to be mutually beneficial. “We are talking to China so that it would also be importing some of its own items from Nigeria, so that the trading balance can be sort of reduced. “Will Nigeria benefit from this? I want to say categorically that Nigeria will from this. It’s less pressure on the dollar and consequently on our reserves, he said.”

Emefiele, according to The Cable, added that the CBN could not continue with indeterminate adjustment (devaluation) of the currency, without taking necessary structural reforms. “For the first time, we are taking structural reforms seriously in the country. We’ve always talked about, oh, when you do an adjustment, follow it up with structural reforms.

“But we are saying this time, we’ve done an adjustment and we are following it up with structural reform, to diversify the economy from depending on oil. “I’ve said it that we have seen people who are coming in to invest.

During the china trip, we saw people who said they can now come in instead of exporting those items into Nigeria, they can now bring those plants into Nigeria and begin to produce those things in Nigeria because our climate is good.

“I repeat, what is the raw material for fertilizer? It is gas. We have it in large quantity; when you bring in the plant, you don’t need to import any raw material again. We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel; we just want people to show understanding,” the CBN governor said.

EFCC names Ekweremadu, Anti-corruption Ambassador

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Tuesday, honoured the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, with a special title of “Anti-Corruption Ambassador” based on his support for the fight against graft.

The National Assembly Liason Officer, of the EFCC, Mr. Suleiman Bakari, according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President, Uche Anichukwu, stated this when he led a team of the anti-graft agency on a courtesy visit to Ekweremadu. Bakari said, “As an Anti-Corruption Ambassador, It is therefore Your Excellency, to on behalf of my Acting chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Mustafa Magu and the entire management and staff of the EFCC, decorate you as an Anti-Corruption Ambassador and formally present this frame, as a token of our appreciation to your person and office, and as a symbol of institutional partnership between the EFCC and the National Assembly.”

Bakari, appealed to the National Assembly to ensure adequate funding for the agency and advocated speedy passage of all the anti-corruption Bills before it. Ekweremadu called for the establishment of Special Anti-Corruption Courts to reduce the burden on regular courts and fast-track trial of corruption cases.

He explained that setting up Special Courts, was one of the surest ways to help the fight against corruption, as it would ensure speedy adjudication of corruption cases. He said, “I have been an advocate of special courts for the trial of corruption cases and I believe that other countries, who have enacted laws establishing such, are not fools because there are benefits to be derived therefrom. “The idea is to expedite trial to make sure that those who are involved in corruption matters will have their day in court. “When we have special courts, just as we have the National Industrial Court, such courts will do better than they are doing now.

The establishment of special courts is not just something that will be done by an Act of the National Assembly. “We have to amend the constitution to bring it about under section 6, for the purpose of trying corruption cases.” Ekweremadu advocated value reorientation of Nigerians at all levels, with a view to returning to the good old days, and also cautioned the EFCC to ensure that in fighting corruption, it must respect the rule of law and ensure that the provisions of the constitution regarding fair hearing and treatment of an accused are also respected.

He commended the EFCC for decorating him as an Anti-Corruption Ambassador, and assured them that he would live up to the trust reposed in him. He further said that the National Assembly would do everything within its powers to ensure that the Bills before it, aimed at strengthening the fight against corruption, got speedy attention.

Christian And Islamic Studies Merged By Ministry Of Education, Nigerians React

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that in order to reduce the workload of primary and junior secondary pupils, they will be cutting down subjects from 20 to a maximum of ten subjects under the nine-year basic educational curriculum in order to align with International standards.

To achieve this, the ministry of Education will be partnering with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). However, subjects like Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Religious Studies (IRS), which are separately taught, will now be merged under a compulsory subject known as Religion and National Values (RNV).

Other subjects brought under the RNV include Civic Education, Social Studies, and Security Education. A few Nigerians have reacted to the announcement and here is what they have to say(see reactions below ) What do you think?

SHOCKING : Ikpeazu borrowed 24 billion in 11 months

UMUAHIA— GOVERNOR Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has borrowed a total of N24 billion since he assumed office 11 months ago.

This was made up of a N14.1 billion bail-out fund and another N10 billion which government sources said was for infrastructural development. Meanwhile, the Abia State Government has said that its debt profile was not up to N78 billion as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, which also placed the state as the 5th highest indebted states in the country.

The state Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Obinna Oriaku, disclosed this while reacting to the statistics released by NBS insisting that the figures given by the Bureau were inaccurate. According to him, the state government has engaged a team of consultants, who are currently working to reconcile the financial position of the state. “Well, I am yet to see the document.

I totally disagreed with the figures they are mentioning and our rating. If I heard you right, you mentioned N78billion, it is totally unacceptable and I doubt where they got that from. “Though government is a continuum, from the period we took over, I want to believe that these figures are wrong.

For what we got as bailout was N14.1billion, what we got of course was uniform to every state. What we got from the excess crude was N10 billion which makes a total of N24 billion. “This is the major make up of our debt, then of course, this does not exclude other little debts by way of foreign loans incurred by the last administration or during the period we were at the old Imo State.

“As I talk to you, we have engaged a team of consultants that are working on reconciling those figures with the DMO and they have made substantial progress.Any moment from now, we will be engaging the DMO based on the deductions from the Federal Allocation Account. “I strongly believe that at the end of the engagement, we will have some more funds that will be rededicated to us.

We have fully extinguished those foreign loans. If I am looking at that figure, it is totally unacceptable, however, like I told you, I am yet to see the document then we will know the make-up” Oriaku said.

Fibroid Tumors : What every woman should know

There probably isn't a woman alive who doesn't feel a wave of terror when her doctor mentions the word tumor. But when it's a fibroid tumor, experts say there is little to fear.

"There is virtually no threat of malignancy -- and there are a number of excellent treatment options, as well as the option to do nothing at all -- so there really is no reason to worry," says Steve Goldstein, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Medical Center.

Fibroid tumors are composed of renegade muscle cells that come together to form a fibrous "knot" or "mass" within the uterus. Although all uterine fibroids are the same, they are categorized based on their location: http://goodwealthandhealth.com/fibroid.html

•Submucosal fibroids are located just under the uterine lining.
•Intramural fibroids lie between the muscles of the uterine wall.
•Subserol fibroids extend from the uterine wall into the pelvic cavity.

Fibroids most commonly occur between ages 30 and 40, with black women at greatest risk. To date, at least one genetic link has been identified, indicating that fibroids may also run in families. For some women fibroids cause no symptoms, but when they do, doctors say problems often involve heavy menstrual periods and prolonged bleeding.

"They can also cause pelvic or abdominal pain or swelling and increased urination," says Aydin Arici, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Arici says that ultimately, it is a combination of your symptoms, the location of the fibroid, and the numbers and size, as well as your age and your childbearing potential, that help determine what your course of treatment should be. http://goodwealthandhealth.com/fibroid.html the symptoms of fibroids?

Some women who have fibroids have no symptoms, or have only mild symptoms, while other women have more severe, disruptive symptoms. The following are the most common symptoms for uterine fibroids, however, each individual may experience symptoms differently.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids may include:
     •Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
     •Abnormal bleeding between menstrual periods
•Pelvic pain (caused as the tumor presses on pelvic organs)
    •Frequent urination
     •Low back pain
     •Pain during intercourse
•A firm mass, often located near the middle of the pelvis, which can be felt by the physician .

In some cases, the heavy or prolonged menstrual periods, or the abnormal bleeding between periods, can lead to iron-deficiency anemia, which also requires treatment.

Treatment Options: What You Should Know In the not-too-distant past, doctors routinely performed a hysterectomy Hysterectomies involve the surgical removal of the entire uterus for fibroid tumors. And while newer, less-invasive treatments are available, studies show this dramatic operation is still being performed today -- far more frequently than necessary.

Now we now have a Natural Medications that shrink fibroids by reducing hormonal stimulation, if you are experiencing the above symptoms and wants to get yourself out of them; Visit this link for tips:http://goodwealthandhealth.com/fibroid.html

Boko Haram Cause Heavy Casualty’ on Nigerian Troops

Boko Haram insurgents have inflicted heavy casualties on troops of the Nigerian army, BBC is reporting.

The insurgents were said to have stormed the base of the soldiers in Kareto village in Borno state in large numbers. Sani Usman, spokesman of the army, had earlier confirmed the attack, but refused to go into details.

The BBC quoted a soldier as saying the militants came with “heavy weapons which we didn’t have”. A resident of Kareto said troops managed to regain control of the village with the support of fighter jets. “Several of the militants were killed in the fighting which lasted for several hours,” the resident was quoted as saying.

However, the army subsequently released a brief statement to say its troops had repelled the insurgents. Usman said the insurgents had “attempted an incursion into 113 battalion at Kareto ” but were warded off.

“The timely response of the troops involved air cover as more reinforcement have been deployed,” he said. “The area is now cool and calm.” Despite the claim of the government to have brought the sect under control, attacks have not entirely ended, although they have become less frequent than the pre-Muhammadu Buhari days.

Return Luxury Cars Or Face The Wrath Of Nigerians, NLC To Senators

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on senators who benefited from a recent purchase of 108 brand new Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles by the Senate to immediately return same or face the wrath of the Nigerian people.

The union described the purchase, coming at a time the country is enduring excruciating financial crisis, as a crime against the people. Reports said senators have started taking delivery of the new Sports Utility Vehicles, SUVs, since last week at the rate of N35.1 million per unit.

In a statement by the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, on Monday, Labour said it was “morally despicable and shameful” that the lawmakers embarked on such acquisition when they were supposed to occupy themselves with issues that would benefit the people.

“We consider appalling, insensitive and greedy the decision of the Senate to acquire 108 Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps (one for each member less the Senate President) after collecting car “loans” in August last year for the same purpose,” Mr. Wabba said.

“It is equally morally despicable and shameful that they are doing this after publicly admitting that the standing committees of the Senate are unable to perform their statutory functions due to paucity of funds.” Mr. Wabba said the prices of the vehicles were grossly inflated and demanded that the lawmakers explain where they sourced the funds since the 2016 Appropriation Bill had not been signed into law.

Soldiers arrest 92 armed herdsmen in Abuja

The soldiers of the Guards Brigade of the Nigeria Army have arrested 92 Fulani herdsmen in Abuja. The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the Guards Brigade, Capt. Bashir Jajira, said that 36 of the suspects were arrested by the troops at a military checkpoint between the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State.

The suspected herdsmen were said to have told the soldiers that they were on a mission to recover their stolen cows. He said that 56 others who were also armed were arrested by the soldiers at a military checkpoint at Dantata, along the Abuja Airport Road.
He said that the troops recovered ‘one pump action gun, 19 cartridge dane guns, 118 cartridge ammo, 28 cutlasses, 3 jack knives, 14 sticks, 7 torch lights, certificate of occupancy, assorted charms and hard drugs.’
He said, “A group of 36 herdsmen in Diana Truck and Toyota Camry car with registration number Abu Kuje 994 FX and Niger SUL 541 XA were intercepted and arrested at 177 Guards Battalion location by Keffi checkpoint. “During the interrogation by troops at the checkpoint, they claimed to be going to Nasarawa Local Government in Nasarawa State.” He said that the arrested herdsmen would be handed over to the police for prosecution.

This came just as President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the deployment of military to all parts of the country currently witnessing bloody clashes between herdsmen and farmers. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this while featuring on a breakfast programme of Channel s Television, Sunrise Daily, on Monday.

The programme was monitored by one of our correspondents in Abuja. Shehu said there was no truth in the claim that Buhari had been largely silent on the issue of the clashes. He recalled that the President had taken the issue before the National Council of State with a view to getting state governors’ inputs to the solutions.

In the meantime, he said the government was contemplating carving out of grazing reserves for cattle rearers. Meanwhile, no fewer than 23,000 Internally Displaced Persons in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State are battling with the problem of shelter as the rains set in.
The Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Agatu Local Government Area, Mr. Joseph Ngbede, stated this on Monday when Governor Samuel Ortom visited Ugbokpo, Ojantele and Ataganyi communities of the Apa Local Government Area, where the camps of the IDPs are located.

The IDPs are Benue indigenes displaced during the clashes involving Fulani herdsmen and Agatu people. Ngbede said that only the LGEA Primary School at Ayila was standing in the over 20 villages destroyed in Agatu by herdsmen, maintaining that some of the displaced persons insisted on going to their farms to see what was left of their crops.

On the feeding of the displaced persons, the chairman said the items donated by individuals, government and non-governmental organisations as well as emergency management agencies at the state and at federal levels were being distributed to them on a daily basis.

He said those not displaced were also contributing towards the upkeep of the IDPs. He explained that the three villages of Ocholonya, Abugbe and Odugbeho that were occupied by herdsmen had been secured by soldiers. Meanwhile, the state’s deputy governor, Benson Abounu, has said that Agatu people have been rescued by soldiers.

New Oluwo of Iwo now wants to be addressed as Emperor (Photos)

Henceforth, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi (Itelu 1), a prominent king in Osun, would prefer to be addressed as Emperor.

Under this new identity, his domain also has been accorded a change as it would now be referred to as "Greater Iwo Empire".

The change of status was necessitated by the fact that according to the monarch, it takes between 10 & 15 kings to make an empire and in the Iwo kingdom there are not less than 27 ancient and powerful kings.

He told Punch in a recent interview:

“Looking at what makes an empire, I realised it needs to have 10 to 15 kings. I have in the Greater Iwo Empire over 27 ancient and powerful kings. Some of them have been kings before some major kings in Yorubaland.
“Having an empire in this modern day is not about wars; it is about dreams, aspirations and how to drive towards the goals. Iwo is now ‘Greater Iwo Empire,’ so I am also attaining a new status, which is Emperor of Greater Iwo Empire and that is how I am being addressed now.
“It is a vision, but one that is divine, spiritual and godly. Many things have changed in Iwo now.

Akanbi urged the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, to borrow more money to run the state. The Consultant to the Osun State Government on Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, recently put the amount borrowed by Aregbesola administration at N122bn.

La Liga title race: Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico's remaining fixtures

Barcelona forward, Suarez reacts to missing a chance against Valencia, Getty

Barcelona’s march towards their second successive La Liga title under Luis Enrique has hit the bricks in recent weeks, as we’re sure you are aware. Ever since that dramatic clásico defeat to a depleted Real Madrid at the Nou Camp, Barça’s season has entered a tailspin.

There is now a very real possibility that a team recently hailed as the best of their generation may end this season potless. This weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia, revitalised under Pako Ayestaran, was theirg third on the bounce in the league and came after Champions League elimination at the quarter-final stage. All told, it leaves Atletico Madrid and Real breathing down their necks with just five games left to play.

     La Liga table (Google)

So, how does the run-in look for each of the three sides in contention?

     Barcelona’s remaining league fixtures (Google)
"I think we need five wins to win the title and if there is any team that is capable of doing that it's Barcelona," Enrique said following the Valencia defeat. He’s right. Five wins would see Barça take the title, no matter what their rivals don't.

If teams finish level on points in La Liga, head-to-head record is used to separate them rather than goal difference. Barcelona have superior records over both clubs from the capital in this regard. Their run-in is also, on paper, relatively simple. All their forthcoming opponents are in the league’s lower reaches, with Deportivo La Coruña, currently in 13th position, representing their toughest test. A trip to the Estadio Riazor is next up and a win there would provide the boost in confidence needed to turn this form around.

Atletico Madrid's remaining game fixtures (Google)

Diego Simeone’s men may have closed the gap this weekend but their next few fixtures are markedly tougher than those of their title rivals. A trip to the Basque country to face 5th-placed Athletic Bilbao is next up, followed by mid-table Malaga.

Simpler obstacles to negotiate come in the form of Rayo Vallencano and Levante but this season’s surprise package, Celta Vigo, will be no pushovers on thet last day of the season. With this run-in and those Champions League semi-finals against Bayern Munich to contend with, Atleti may be hard-pressed to continue the fight on all fronts.

Real Madrid's remaining game fixtures (Google)

More good news for cules here, as Madrid’s momentum may be dealt a blow by high-flying Villarreal on Wednesday. El Submarino Amarillo are looking to cement 4th-spot and beat Madrid earlier this season, albeit while they were in the care of former head coach Rafael Benitez.

After that, it’s a trip to Rayo Vallecano, who are likely to show greater resistance than they did while going down 10-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu in December. Los Blancos will then meet a number of mid-table sides with little to play for. Real go on the road to Real Sociedad, where Barcelona were recently felled, before entertaining Valencia. On the last day, they travel to Deportivo.

So who will come out on top???

On paper, you would still fancy Barcelona to be the first to cross the line, even if they do so with a limp rather than a canter. A lot will depend on how they react when they go to the Riazor in two days time. Win and, considering their remaining fixtures, you would back them to see it out. Draw or lose and it’s a different story, especially if they are taken off the top spot for the first time since January.
