SHOCKING DETAILS : Lady Gaga’s startup Backplane burns out and sells assets

“Why do you need money from me when you have every great investor on earth?” That’s the question that caused Backplane to buckle under the weight of its own early buzz.
Lady Gaga’s social network builder startup has run out of money, gone out of business, and sold its assets to a group of previous and new investors who will try to restart it. That’s according to multiple sources, the legal firms that handled the sale, and its former CEO. Backplane’s legacy will serve as a warning of the dangers of fundraising at too high of valuations with exploitative terms in party rounds where no investor takes responsibility. The company is also emblematic of the trouble caused when lavish lifestyles drive up burn rates and bleed companies dry. 5 years and $18.9 million later, the two issues combined to destroy the startup
Founded in 2011, Backplane raised an Series A of $12.1 million in 2012 from the top venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. Sequoia, Google Ventures, Founders Fund, SV Angel, Greylock, Menlo Ventures, Formation 8, and Eric Schmidt’s TomorrowVentures all poured money in at around a $40 million valuation.
That was despite basically just being a fan site for Lady Gaga with hopes of launching social networks for brands. It eventually raised $5 million more. But after three years of jet-set founders running two fancy offices, the company had failed to make progress on product, and I reported multiple sources saying the startup was crashing.
Backplane tried to pivot into Place.xyz, cutting its burn rate $160,000 per month, bringing on new CEO Scott Harrison, and restructuring as a self-serve social network maker mobile app.
It grew to 15,000 communities and planned to build apps for Burning Man and LSU. Liquidation Preferences Vaporized Backplane.
The problem was that Harrison says the big-name VC money came with tough liquidation preferences that would give those investors returns first if Backplane had a successful exit.
When the cash recently ran out, the firms wouldn’t put more in, and their reluctance and the bad deal terms scared away new investors. Harrison tells me my article on the company’s previous stumbles also hurt its fundraising abilities.
A Chinese backer was supposed to spearhead a $2.5 million round to keep the startup alive, but they dropped out last-minute.

Chelsea's John Terry undergoing platelet rich plasma therapy

Chelsea captain John Terry says he is undergoing platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) in a bid to recover from his Achilles injury.
The 35-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, has missed Chelsea’s last two matches, having only recently recovered from a hamstring problem which kept him out for six games.
Terry, who is expected to be out for another two to three weeks, posted a photo of himself in surgical scrubs on Instagram and used an emoticon of a syringe.
He wrote: “PRP Being injured is the most frustrating thing as a player. Working hard to get back fit.”
The former England captain earlier on Monday posted a short video of himself in the gym, demonstrating his desire to return to full fitness.
Laboratory studies have shown that PRP can potentially speed up the healing process. PRP involves reintroducing a concentrated platelet solution derived from the patient’s blood. Platelets, which along with red and white cells is part of blood, contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors.
PRP has been used by athletes in a range of sports, including golfer Tiger Woods. The practice is permitted by the World Anti-doping Agency, after it removed it from its prohibited list at the start of 2011.
WADA says on its website: “Despite the presence of some growth factors, platelet-derived preparations were removed from the [prohibited] list as current studies on PRP do not demonstrate any potential for performance enhancement beyond a potential therapeutic effect.”
Terry made his 700th Chelsea appearance at Everton last month and his 701st in the draw with West Ham before the international break, but did not play in the 4-0 win at Aston Villa or the 1-0 loss at Swansea.
The defender in January said he would be leaving Chelsea this summer as he had not been offered a contract extension.
The club insisted an offer could be forthcoming. Last week, Antonio Conte was appointed Chelsea head coach for next season and is likely to have a major say on Terry’s future. Meanwhile, Terry has offered to pay the funeral costs of eight-year-old Chelsea fan Tommi Miller, who died following leukaemia on March 31.
Terry told the Cambridge News: “Having had the pleasure of meeting Tommi at a Chelsea game I was totally devastated to hear of him passing away. “I’m sure his family and friends will give him the send-off he deserves.” Tommi’s mum Ruth added: “I’m overwhelmed really, because Tommi was such a great fan of John Terry in particular. He was one of his favourite players.”

Samsung to digitalize 104 Unity Schools in Nigeria

Using technology to transform Nigerian educational system has received a new boost as Samsung Electronics West Africa in partnership wit the Federal Government and Skool Media have concluded arrangement to digitize no fewer than 104 unity schools in Nigeria on the platform of mobile learning This development would provide students with the opportunity to have their classrooms literally put in their palms.

With the new development, Samsung tablet devices will be paired with relevant and applicable educational content customized with Skool Media content, while also kitting classrooms across these Unity schools with Samsung Electronic Boards, Wireless Printers and wireless connectivity. The aim of this is to turn classrooms across Nigeria into “Smart classrooms” where learning is practical, fun, progressive and impactful. The Director, Business to Business, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Charles Ojei who spoke on the partnership said “This Solution provides tablets for students with relevant and practical educational content hence putting the classroom in the palms of the students. This makes the classroom interactive, collaborative and conducive for students and teachers.

The solution also provides security of the device and helps the schools filters contents consumed by students. It makes the device purely for academic purpose.” He added that the initiative is a laudable milestone in the Nigerian educational system, giving both teachers control over the classroom and giving students an atmosphere that makes learning easier and more memorable. Skool Media, an ICT solution based initiative has an MOU with Samsung electronics as a Technology Partner to provide Technical expertise as a company that is experienced in the delivery of Educational services and solution.

Advertisement For the Project Director, Skool Media, Moses Imayi, “Our aim is that through this partnership with Samsung and the Federal Ministry of Education, we can promote information, communication and technological development in Nigeria while providing tools for facilitating our process values. The vision is to see the average Nigerian student become familiar and truly comfortable with learning in a digitalized classroom.

This we believe will be the beginning of better performing educational system in Nigeria. Through this project, we are building the IT competence of the next generation of leaders and providing employment opportunities to over 200 young Nigerian graduates’’. He said that a lot of Nigerian students are not familiar with new learning tools such as tablets, electronics boards and even accessing appropriate educational content online and the purpose of this partnership is to change that mindset, both within the students and the teachers.

Representing the newly appointed Federal Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, permanent secretary, Ministry of Information, Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan earlier in her remarks expressed her excitement about the impact this will have on education in Abuja. She commended Samsung’s effort and contribution towards ICT development within the country. “We are indeed grateful to Samsung for tapping into the goal of the ministry of education to train quality teachers. We encourage all beneficiaries of this project to take full ownership of the project and let the improved quality of teaching reflect in our students’ results” she said.

She urged all stakeholders in the education sector to partner with the ministry of education to salvage the country’s educational system. “As ICT becomes more and more entrenched in our lives, it is essential that our students are exposed to it, guided by teachers who can use technology to add real value to the learning experience.”, she said.

Ezekwesili advocates more attention to Girl-child education

The federal government has been advised to reprioritise its policy on girl child education to achieve the much-needed development in the country.
The advice was given by a co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, at an event to mark the Global Week of Action for the abducted Chibok girls.
The event is part of the activities put together by the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaigners to mark the two years anniversary of the abduction of 219 schoolgirls in Chibok.
The activity looked at the nation’s endangered education system following the wave of abduction and killings of school children in the northeast by members of the Boko Haram sect.
Dr Ezekwesili was of the view that government at all levels must have a strategic plan of action to remove the impediments to the ‎education of girls in Nigeria.
There were also words of encouragement from members of the international community. The Ambassador of Netherlands to Nigeria, John Groffen and his Canadian counterpart, Perry Calderwood both expressed hope to see more enrolment of girls in school, backed by adequate security in the days ahead.
The consensus at the event was that education remains key to the socio economic development of any nation and investing in this key area should be the top priority on the minds of government and key players.

Inspector General of Police; Mr. Arase Solomon

Egbe expressed concern over the rising cases of girl-child defilement in Bayelsa State. ECOWAS Court To Hear Dasuki Case

West African regional bloc ECOWAS ruled on Monday it will hear the case of Nigeria’s ex-national security advisor Sambo Dasuki, who claims he has been unlawfully arrested and detained without trial.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court set aside the Nigerian government’s objections to it taking the case, saying the matter dealt with “fundamental” human rights issues. Dasuki, on trial for fraud in connection with the alleged looting of millions of dollars from arms contracts, has been detained since December despite being granted bail.

“From the totality of the issues brought before this court, it is clear and there is no ambiguity that the applicant is seeking enforcement of his right to freedom,” said judge Friday Chijoke Nwoke. “In our opinion, what Dasuki brought before us as a case is an issue for the enforcement of his fundamental rights to liberty.”

The ECOWAS decision to hear Dasuki’s case comes less than a week after an Abuja court directed the Nigerian government to allow the former security chief access to his lawyers. “This government needs to take more seriously the judicial process,” human rights lawyer Clement Nwankwo told AFP. “When it fails to do so, it discredits any trial that it conducts.”

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was voted into power on an anti-corruption platform, vowing to stamp out endemic graft in Africa’s largest economy. The country’s anti-graft agency has since levelled fraud charges against several high-profile politicians but none of them has yet been convicted.

The Modern Twist To Rocking Ankara Fabrics

Gone are those days where all we could make with the fabric were conventional dresses to attend Church, weddings and what’s not.
These days you can sew them into any and everything including pencil skirts, trousers, crop tops, jackets, jumpsuits, pant suits and even swimwear.
What’s more interesting is that you can now mix various Ankara prints to create a particular look outfit. If that’s not super cool, then I don’t know what is.
The revamped way of rocking Ankara has made it one of, if not the most used fabric both locally and internationally.

Kerry visits memorial near ground zero of WWII atomic bombing in Hiroshima

HIROSHIMA, Japan — Secretary of State John F. Kerry on Monday said he thought everybody, including President Obama, should visit Hiroshima, after completing what he called a “gut-wrenching” visit to a museum at Ground Zero in the city where the United States dropped the first atomic bomb in World War II.

“Everyone means everyone,” Kerry told reporters after diplomats from seven powerful democracies issued a declaration to work for a safer world free of nuclear weapons. “So I hope one day the president of the United States will be among the everyone who should be here.” Kerry allowed that he did not know whether Obama would make a side trip to Hiroshima when he visits Japan next month, as the White House is pondering, and he might have to come as an ex-president.
But Kerry vowed, “I will certainly convey to him what I saw here and how important it is at some point that he gets here.” Kerry was in Hiroshima for a two-day meeting with foreign ministers preparing for a meeting next month of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries.
But their discussions on the crises of the moment were overshadowed by reminders of past horrors.
At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial museum, Kerry and his fellow diplomats viewed powerful remnants left by the bomb nicknamed “Little Boy,” from charred tricycles and melted roof tiles to cancerous tongues and mannequins with melting skin. “Going through this museum was a reminder of the depth of obligation that every single one of us in public life carries, in fact every person in position of responsibility carries, to work for peace,” Kerry said.
He also took an unprompted swipe at suggestions by GOP presidential contender Donald Trump that Japan and South Korea should get nuclear weapons to defend itself from aggressive moves by North Korea. “That is also why any suggestion by any candidate for high public office that we should be building more weapons and giving them to countries like Korea or Japan are absurd on their face and run counter to everything every president, Republican and Democrat alike, has tried to achieve since World War II,” Kerry said, his voice tinged with anger and disbelief. Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida was equally blunt earlier when asked about Trump’s suggestion. “For us to attain nuclear weapons is completely inconceivable,” he said in Japanese. Kerry’s final day in Hiroshima was marked by contrasts: sunshine and dark memories, stunned silence and children’s laughter, and, ultimately, a note of optimism.

After spending almost an hour at the museum, Kerry and the foreign ministers walked solemnly to lay wreaths of white and pink carnations at a cenotaph that frames an eternal flame and the skeletal ruins of the one, dome-shaped building left standing after the August 1945 nuclear blast.
They approached the marker past about 800 elementary schoolchildren who cheered and waved flags, in a calculated effort to keep the focus on the future.
The children seemed to lift the spirits of the diplomats after a wrenching hour touring the museum’s gruesome and poignant exhibits.
One minute, they were standing grim-faced at the cenotaph, laying wreaths with their names and the countries they represented. The next, they smiled and bent over to shake hands or hug the young children who approached them with paper leis. As they talked to the children, their backs to the marker, a brisk wind arose and blew several wreaths off their silver mounts, but they were quickly put back into place and secured. “They were touched and moved and truly impressed and shocked,” said Kishida, a Hiroshima native who emotionally described how his fellow diplomats had extended their visit .

The diplomatic lineup at the wreath-laying ceremony presented a strong image of nations once locked in war with each other and now standing shoulder to shoulder as allies. Kerry stood between Kishida and British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
They were joined by foreign ministers from Germany, Italy, France and Canada, as well as the European Union. Kerry, an optimistic man by nature, said the purpose of his visit was one he hoped North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, would heed. “We have built out of the ashes of war and that moment of horror an extraordinary relationship that stands as an example to people all over world of what can be,” Kerry said.

To that end, the diplomats issued four highly detailed, joint communiques and declarations reiterating their positions on a wide range of issues and conflicts around the world.
They called for nuclear disarmament, beseeched North Korea to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons and decried attempts by terrorist groups to obtain chemical weapons and nuclear explosives.
In the Hiroshima Declaration, they addressed the symbolism of meeting in the city nearly 71 years after the end of World War II, a conflict they said “unleashed unprecedented horror upon the world.” “The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki experienced immense devastation and human suffering as a consequence of the atomic bombings and have rebuilt their cities so impressively,” they said.

“In this historic meeting, we reaffirm our commitment to seeking a safer world for all and to creating the conditions for a world without nuclear weapons in a way that promotes international stability.
This task is made more complex by the deteriorating security environment in a number of regions, such as Syria and Ukraine, and, in particular by North Korea’s repeated provocations.” Kerry and other State Department officials stepped delicately around his visit, straddling the ground between an empathetic acknowledgment of the bomb’s massive death toll and a focus on the quest for a nuclear-free future. “While we will revisit the past and honor those who perished, this trip is not about the past,” Kerry said before a meeting with Kishida.
“It’s about the present and the future particularly, and the strength of the relationship that we have built, the friendship that we share, the strength of our alliance, and the strong reminder of the imperative we all have to work for peace for peoples everywhere.” Kerry is the first secretary of state to visit Hiroshima, though other senior government officials have come.

Despite concerns that Kerry might say something that could construed as an apology, few Japanese seem to consider one necessary.
“I think and I hope that his visit will show that the reconciliation between the U.S. and Japan has advanced to an extraordinary level,” said a senior State Department official, speaking anonymously under ground rules for briefing reporters. “That the American people and the Japanese people share a revulsion towards war and a determination to work for peace.
That he admires, as I think most of us do, the resilience and the determination of the people of Hiroshima, who have rebuilt with love in their hearts, not hatred.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Too Old For Manchester United?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s touted move to Manchester United looks unlikely after Louis van Gaal hinted the striker was too old.

The 34-year-old Sweden international looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer and he is believed to favour a move to the Premier League. “We need to improve our selection [squad], because when I took over we had six or seven players above 33 years old,” Van Gaal told Swedish TV station Viasat.
“Nobody knows that anymore because now they are gone. But now we have a much younger team and still we need a much younger selection because we need creative players in attack and also fast players. “I think it is unbelievable what he (Ibrahimovic) is doing.

I saw the game against Manchester City, and it was a big disappointment for me because he should have scored two times at least. “Paris Saint-Germain is Zlatan and that is fantastic.

When a manager like me, who favours the team [above the individual], is saying that, that is a compliment for him. “But he’s already 34 and I just spoke about the age [of the players] I let go.”
