Inspector General of Police; Mr. Arase Solomon
The suspect, whose name was given as Chinedu Eze, alias Chiboy, was arrested by operatives attached to the Akenfa Police Division in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the suspect was apprehended on Saturday following the alarm raised by the mother of the minor.
The victim, was said to have told her mother about the incident and complained of severe abdominal pains.
It was learnt that a Bayelsa-based girl child right advocacy group, Operation Rescue, intervened and filed a complaint at the Akenfa Police Division which led to the arrest of the culprit.
The victim, a Primary Four pupil, according to the Police, alleged that the man had had canal knowledge of her many times and always gave her N100 for her to keep silent.
The Coordinator of Operation Rescue, Princess Egbe, confirmed the arrest of Eze, saying the Officer in Charge of Family Welfare at the Akenfa Police Station had assisted the group in conducting a medical test on the victim.
Egbe expressed concern over the rising cases of girl-child defilement in Bayelsa State. She regretted that in the last four months of 2016, over 10 cases had been reported, noting that others were not reported because there was no special desk handling such cases by the Nigeria Police in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident. He said the suspect (Eze) was in custody and would be charged to court immediately investigation was concluded.
